John K.
John K, 48 years old, was laid off in July after working as a call
center team leader and trainer for almost eight years. When he came
to us in August, his wife was also about to be laid off from her
job. With a mortgage and college-age children, his situation was
becoming desperate. We worked with John on his resume and interviewing
tips, and conducted job development efforts on his behalf. After
several months, we were able to secure an interview for him with
DuPage County in Wheaton. He was hired as a trainer and his starting
salary is approximately $43,000 per year. When he was laid off from
his previous job, he was earning approximately $40,000 a year.

William
W.
William had 3 years of retail sales experience when he was laid
off from his job at a Northbrook hardware store. Since then, he
had been aggressively pursuing job leads. William's persistence
paid off when he obtained employment on April 16th with the Home
Depot. He was proud to get hired by such a well-known company where
he would be working as a Plumbing Assistant. He was appreciative
of the working relationship between E&ES and Home Depot because
it helped him get a job so quickly.

Jennifer
W.
Jennier was a high school student with the goal of attending college.
She wanted to make her sister and legal guardian proud that she
would be the first in her family to get a college degree. Jennifer
also knew that she would need a job to finance her education. At
E&ES, she competed job readiness training and then met with
a job developer who talked to her about her previous cashiering
experience. After discussing her interest in helping customers and
working with money, Jennifer was referred to Osco Drugs and was
hired as a cashier/stock person. Her new income will aid her to
stay in school and achieve her goals.

Leroy
S.
Leroy had worked at Brach's Candy as a candy wrapper machine operator
since 1974. In November 2001, he was laid off as part of the company's
move to South America. At the time of layoff, he was earning $15
per hour. We assisted Leroy with resume preparation, interviewing
tips and job development/job referral services. After several tried
with various companies, we were able to secure an interview for
him at Kraft/Post Foods in Naperville. They offered him a job and
he accepted. He started work in February, earning 14.00 per hour.
After one year, his wage will increase to $17.00 per hour.

Scott
A.
When Scott A. visited the Illinois Employment & Training Center
at Daley College, he had been unemployed for almost 6 months. His
skills were limited and he was close to exhausting his unemployment
benefits. Although Scott was willing and eager to work and had maintained
a spotless reputation with his previous employer of 10+ years, he
was under qualified for the higher paying labor jobs. The job counselors
at the IETC explained that he would need to acquire additional skills
and recommended that he consider enrolling one of the training opportunities
available to him as a dislocated worker. They also assisted him
with finding a part time job that coordinated with his class schedule.
Scott found work after completing his training and passed the CDL
exam. He is currently making over $30,000 per year. He told him
counselors that none of this would have happened without the help
and direction that he received from the One Stop Career Center.
